LibraryGrantsCREST HILL – Thanks to State Senator Meg Loughran Cappel and Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, three school districts in the 49th Senate District have secured grants to support student learning.

“Libraries are full of learning and provide educational opportunities for young minds, which is why it’s crucial we push for grants like this,” said Loughran Cappel (D-Shorewood). “We need to keep school libraries modern and properly equipped so all students have access to resources that further enhance their academic journey.”

The grants, awarded in the spring of every fiscal year, support school library services for Illinois students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade. Resources and services supported through the grants include library books, e-books, audiobooks, periodicals, multilingual materials, technology and programs. In the district Loughran Cappel represents, three school districts have been awarded funding:

  • Richland School District 88A - $850
  • Troy Community Consolidated School District 30C - $3,228
  • Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 - $20,009

Based on a statutory formula, school districts receive $0.885 per student enrolled at each school with a qualified library. Funding for the Secretary of State’s School District Library Grant Program is appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly.

“Illinois students deserve to have access to quality library resources, including learning materials, books and online services at our public schools,” Giannoulias said. “Libraries serve as places of knowledge, learning and discovery and this funding will help equip them to educate and inspire our future generations.”
