SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Meg Loughran Cappel was the driving force behind a new law that requires medical professionals to take courses educating them on menopause and perimenopause.
“Despite most women going through menopause, there haven’t been an appropriate amount of conversations or education on the subject for a long time,” said Loughran Cappel (D-Shorewood). “By teaching medical professionals how to recognize and manage menopause and perimenopause, we can ensure that women receive the best possible health care.”
The law requires medical and nursing schools to teach menopause and perimenopause recognition and management, including to licensed practical nurses and registered nurses. This will make medical professionals more informed about women’s health, leading to better care.
“Women have been dismissed, misdiagnosed and left to suffer in silence for decades,” said Loughran Cappel. “When nurses and doctors are educated on perimenopause and menopause, we send a clear message: women’s health at every stage of life matters in Illinois.”
Senate Bill 3688 was signed into law Friday and takes effect Jan. 1.
